We must never let this kind of creeping restriction of religious freedom happen in our country. By staying proactive and taking action, we can prevent these kinds of infringements on religious freedoms in our schools.

Being an educator, I can share something from my own experience. At a public high school where I taught, we got together and worked with the school administration to open up a prayer room for Muslim students. We even had the administration create a special hall pass called the “Prayer Pass.” Any Muslim student who wanted to pray during class could use it to leave class for prayer, provided their parents had signed a permission slip.

At another public school I taught in, I started an after-school club called the Muslim Cultural Bridges Club (MCBC) to help Muslim children feel more welcome at their public school. There was some pushback from the principal to starting my club, but I persevered, Alhamdulillah (All Perfect praise belongs only to Allah).

I also once personally spoke to Senator Mark Warner of Virginia and asked him to look into having a prayer room in every public school across the state. He was very favorable towards my idea and said he would look into the matter.

But we have to work for these things so that what’s happening in Canada never happens here in our country.
