This is a continuation of a series on the structure and organization of the Quran. The goal is to help the reader appreciate the amazing coherence of Allah\u2019s \"sub\u1e25\u0101nahu\u00a0word and dismantle the myth of the \u201crandom\u201d and \u201cunorganized\u201d Quran.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u0633\u064f\u0648\u0631\u064e\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u064e\u0635\u0631<\/strong><\/h2>\n

S\u016brat al-Asr<\/i><\/strong><\/h2>\n

S\u016brat al-Asr (Time Running Out) <\/span><\/i>is one of the shortest\u00a0<\/span>suwar<\/span><\/i>\u00a0of the Quran, yet one of the densest in terms of meaning and guidance. The famous jurist, Im\u0101m Sh\u0101fi’\u012b, was recorded to have said that if the people only considered this\u00a0<\/span>s\u016brah<\/span><\/i>, it alone would suffice them for their guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to its richness of content, it appears that the\u00a0<\/span>s\u016brah<\/span><\/i>\u00a0may be broken down and organized into a mirror structure:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
A<\/b> \u2013 I swear by time that is running out, (1)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0B<\/b> \u2013 Indeed, everyone, without exception, is definitely in total loss, (2)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 C<\/b> \u2013 Except for those who have believed<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 C\u2019<\/b> \u2013 and done righteous deeds<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0B\u2019<\/b> \u2013 and advised each other to truth<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
A\u2019<\/b> \u2013 and advised each other to patience. (3)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Connections<\/b><\/h2>\n

[A]\/[A\u2019]<\/b> – Allah \ufdfb begins with an oath which inspires the believers with a sense of urgency. Time is running out! We do not have long to implement good works and internalize faith. This is paired with the believers enjoining one another with the traits most associated with time; patience and perseverance (<\/span>\u1e63abr<\/span><\/i>).<\/span>1<\/a><\/sup>This connection is more clearly seen in S\u016brat al-Ma\u02bf\u0101rij (The Ways of Ascent) where Allah \ufdfb says about the Day of Judgement, \u0641\u064e\u0627\u0635\u0652\u0628\u0650\u0631\u0652 \u0635\u064e\u0628\u0652\u0631\u064b\u0627 \u062c\u064e\u0645\u0650\u064a\u0644\u064b\u0627 * \u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u064a\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0628\u064e\u0639\u0650\u064a\u062f\u064b\u0627 * \u0648\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0627\u0647\u064f \u0642\u064e\u0631\u0650\u064a\u0628\u064b\u0627 So be patient with gracious patience * Indeed, they see it [as] distant, * But We see it [as] nearby. Believers are being told that they only have to endure the intolerance and arrogance of disbelief for a brief time. This life is shorter than we think.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

[B]\/[B\u2019]<\/b> – One emphasizes their statements when the audience may not believe them, so it is appropriate that the second\u00a0<\/span>\u0101yah <\/span><\/i>of Surah al-Asr<\/span>, which is grammatically emphasized on multiple levels (this is more easily seen in the Arabic), is paired with the enjoinment to advise one another with the Truth. If there was ever a reason to emphasize a point, it would be with regard to the ultimate Truth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

[C]\/[C\u2019]<\/b> – At the center lie two key attributes of the believers; belief and righteous actions. These two are paired together throughout the Quran to emphasize their important relationship. Good actions will not benefit us without proper belief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And Allah \ufdfb\u00a0knows best.<\/span><\/p>\n
